This mountain and national park is the inspiration behind the name of Montenegro. The name Crna Gora (“Black Mountain”) was derived from the appearance of Mount Lovcen when covered in dense forest and first appeared in the 1276 charter issued by Stefan Milutin. The national park stretches from the Bay of Kotor hinterland to the high peaks of the Lovćen massif. It was established in 1952 to protect significant historical, cultural, and architectural heritage alongside the precious land.
